More Orwellian Doublespeak
On the principle that if you repeat a lie often enough, or omit and bend the truth, people might come to believe it, here's this week's "Orwellian Doublespeak" winner:
"From the beginning Democrats jumped the gun on the inability to find WMDs in Iraq. Hussein and his stooges had 10 years of practice on hiding WMDs; it was unreasonable to expect that our forces would discover them right away. As the search unfolds, we will likely discover evidence of WMDs. When we do, not only will Bush get a big boost in the polls, his Democratic and liberal critics will look foolish." (source)
Uh.... and maybe Bush will look foolish or like a liar? Remember that the public rationale for the war was that in a few months, the U.N. weapons had been unable to find the WMDs -- so Bush had to step in so it could be done right. Lots of original quotes from earlier in 2003 to prove that this WAS the public rationale.
So .. take your pick ... the administration misled the public and other nations about the rationale, or they were unable to do any better than the U.N. inspectors could.
